8 Lightning Lane Tips My Disney Clients Use to Maximize Their Disney World Vacations
Lightning Lane Multi Pass can save you hours of waiting in line at Disney World, but most guests are only scratching the surface of what’s possible.
These are some of the lesser-known Lightning Lane strategies I use when helping clients plan their Disney vacations. And as much as I’d like to gate keep these, today I am sharing some of my best Lightning Lane tips to help as many people as I can get the most out of their Lightning Lanes.
1. Stay Onsite if Possible
If you’re planning to use Lightning Lane Multi Pass, staying at a Disney resort can make a huge difference.
Disney resort guests can book their Lightning Lanes 7 days before check-in for their entire stay. Offsite guests book just 3 days before each park day.
Those extra days matter, especially for popular rides like Slinky Dog Dash, Big Thunder Mountain, and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.
2. Make Lightning Lanes Part of Your Budget
I know Lightning Lanes aren’t free, but for many families it’s the single best place to spend extra money at Disney World.
You will see creators or annual pass holders say you don’t need Lightning Lanes, and that is because they get to go to Disney all the time…but if you are planning a once in a lifetime or even a once a year trip to Disney, budget for Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
The days of relying on “off-season” crowds are mostly gone. If minimizing wait times is important to your family, plan for Lightning Lanes from the beginning rather than hoping you won’t need them.
3. Park Hopping? Start at Animal Kingdom
If you’re purchasing Lightning Lane Multi Pass and planning to hop parks, Animal Kingdom often has the lowest Lightning Lane pricing.
You can purchase your pass for Animal Kingdom and still book Lightning Lanes in your second park once you’ve tapped into your first reservation.
4. Use Standby Skipper
If there’s one Disney planning splurge I recommend over and over, it’s Standby Skipper.
For around $45, it automatically searches for better return times and books Lightning Lanes for you throughout the day.
Less screen time. More vacation.
5. Put Hollywood Studios Later in Your Trip
This is one of my favorite planning tricks.
Hollywood Studios has some of the toughest Lightning Lane availability at Disney World. By scheduling your Hollywood Studios day toward the end of your vacation, you’ll usually have access to much better return times when booking 7 days before check-in.
If Slinky Dog Dash is on your must-do list, this strategy can make a big difference.
6. Book a “Burner Ride”
One of my favorite Lightning Lane hacks is booking an easy ride early in the morning.
Why?
Because as soon as you tap into your first Lightning Lane, you’re allowed to book another one.
My favorite burner rides include:
• Spaceship Earth at EPCOT
• Alien Swirling Saucers at Hollywood Studios
• it’s a small world at Magic Kingdom
• The Barnstormer at Magic Kingdom
Getting that first tap-in early can help you grab another popular attraction before availability disappears. And once your tap in, all the tiers disappear!
7. You Don’t Have to Use All Three Preselections
Most guests assume they need to fill all three preselected Lightning Lane slots.
Not always.
Sometimes leaving room in your strategy can create more flexibility, especially at EPCOT. I use this approach frequently when helping clients stack better attractions quickly. This is expert level and you can read more about this here.
8. Book Hollywood Studios First
When your booking window opens to snag your preselects, don’t necessarily start with your first park day.
Start with Hollywood Studios.
Even if it’s your third or fourth park day, securing attractions like Slinky Dog Dash first can lead to much better return times than waiting until the end of your booking session.
Final Thoughts
Lightning Lane strategy isn’t about chasing every ride. It’s about spending less time in line and more time making memories with your family.
These small tweaks may not seem like much, but together they can completely change your Disney World experience.
